The photographic works of Ann Shelton oscillate between conceptual and documentary modes of image making. The
images that makeup in a forest engage with history in relation to the social and cultural memories and meanings of
a particular group of trees. These trees, sometimes erroneously said to have been given by Hitler himself, were presented
to the gold medalists at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany as seedlings and are often referred
to colloquially as ‘Hitler Oaks’. Shelton’s new work charts the complex nature of these tree signs and their shifting
ideological status from her hometown in Timaru, where one of the trees grows, across North America and Europe.
For Sale Temporary Showspace presents excerpts from this new body of work.
Presenting this ongoing work in London's Borough of Hackney at this period is particularly timely.
As this borough has undergone major gentrification works in preparation to the upcoming 2012 Games,
Ann Shelton's 'in a forest' proposes a welcome investigation which examines the legacy of such events.
The exhibition is set within an environment which is in itself in proprietary transition.
You are heartily welcome to the opening of this exhibition, tonight at For Sale Show Space, 9-11 London Lane, Unit C, London E8 3PR.
Ann Shelton will give an artist talk starting from 7.30pm.
Refreshments will be available.
The work will be on view until 19th of May, 2011.
Ann Shelton (MFA, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada) was born in New Zealand. Shelton is
